Hey Mani,
Great docs, thanks for sharing.
Got a couple of questions that you can probably help me with:
1. In point #9 of the second doc you mentioned to look for the tnsnames.ORA file in the Samba shared folder. Where is that? I just see a pi_home full of subfolders with no sense. In my case I just modified a previous tns entry, having an issue because the new database is not using SID but Service_name
2. How can you access trace/log/output files? I am running some processes in PUM but the payroll one is finishing in error. I just want to check the log files but it is always opening a new empty browser window. So wondering if is there a way to directly open the corresponding folders for ps_reports.

Hi Rafa,
If your PeopleTools script had completed execution successfully, this is what you need to do:
1. Login to your Guest OS, in Linux as root and type the ifconfig command
2. Copy the IP address of your VM
3. In your host OS(Windows), Open the Run prompt and enter \\IP_Address
4. You should be able to see the ORA file most likely inside the oracle-client folder.
Please let me know, if you’re still unable to access the ORA file.

Missed couple of your questions:
1. Yes, the service_name is gonna be the way going forward, so I think you’re good with that. In case you need contents of the ORA file, please let me know, I can copy paste as a comment
2. If you check at the end of the second document, I’ve given steps to install WinSCP , which is a freeware. Works great if you’d need a GUI to access all files from your server.

Let me please ask you another couple of questions:
1- I have switched to classical mode instead of Fluid. When navigating to any page, it looks weird, like not correctly loading the stylesheet or something. Do you have that issue?
2- I am trying to run payroll but GPPDPRUN always runs to error with nothing on the log. Is like not doing anything. Support told me to Flush shared pool, but SYSADM user has no sysdba access. Any idea on the user to use with those priviledges?

1 – nope, I don’t get that issue
2 – GPPDRUN is a cobol process, I presume? Sorry, have no experience with that. Please do let me know if you find a solution for that..

I am actually planning on doing a DPK installation on both Linux and Windows – on spare laptops. But, with the slow internet I have, it is a herculean task – it would take atleast a month for me to download the entire set of zip files 🙂
Nevertheless, I would definitely be doing a post on a bare-metal install. Just that it would a while for me to be ready with the files required. 🙂
That’s a wonderful news … I can imagine how slow the download process could be but still a month wait is worth it… 🙂

I am trying to install HR 9.2 image 18…I think its the same as 16…But I am not able to locate the Oracle Installation directory and the 8.55 Configuration manager & App Designer after running the SetupPTClient batch…Am I missing something??
Well…I found that but I get an error “missing or invalid sql library psora64” while accessing App Designer…Any ideas, how to resolve that…I googled that a bit but not convinced…

Can you please check if the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID variables have been set?
for ORACLE_HOME it should be C:\oracle\product\12.1.0\client_1\ and for ORACLE_SID, it should be your database name – FS92U0016 or whatever database name you have provided.

have you tried pinging your database from command prompt?
Run > cmd and type TNSPING HR92U016
and see if you get proper results. If you don’t, check if this post helps:
Might be an issue with the IP address being used.

Yup…Thanks Mani…I got it resolved by changing / adding some entries in tnsnames.ora…Till then I was not able to ping the DB and adding the ip in the Host file…I did that by googling…However, you have a simple doc (given link)….Thanks Mani for your help throughout the issue…

Subh – alternatively, you can type the following from an administrator command prompt:
SET ORACLE_HOME=C:\oracle\product\12.1.0\client_1\
and the same for ORACLE_SID =

This is one of those basic questions but one that has me perplexed (these questions are based around running the PUM images on VirtualBox on a windows laptop) – why do I need to install Putty and WinSCP. I sort of understand that you need WinSCP to do the file transfer (so to have a look at an application engine trace file – you can transfer it from the virtualbox process scheduler directory onto your laptop) but what does putty do – can you not just log into the virtualbox and navigate around and look at the admin/config files?

Your understanding on WinSCP and navigating around the VirtualBox folders is absolutely correct.
Putty isn’t essential at all – but, it comes in handy, when you’d like t o search contents of SQRs, scripts etc.,
Rather than use the actual Linux prompt, I like using Putty to navigate around folders, searching for code within the server, writing shell scripts etc.,
More of a personal preference, I would say, rather than an absolute necessity.
